Jefferson Martinez from Columbia.
He arrived in Poland in November 2023. He first went to Spain then to Poland via an agency. The agency’s name is Carden Group.
He was taken to work in a factory dealing with wood pellets. They were treated very badly. He was asked to operate dangerous machinery. There were not health and safety in place or protective equipment and clothing.
Workers were paid for the hours they worked but that’s all.
His girlfriend was also working in the same factory. She was given the task to use industrial woodcutters. This machinery was moving on its own and one day, his girlfriend was badly hurt with the machinery cutting her finger off.
The company had never insure them so there was no compensation. They did not have any medical support, instead they were not allowed to call an ambulance.
However, as the injury was bad, they went to the hospital by car, where his girlfriend had to have surgery. She lost her finger. There was never any compensation. We called the police, but as we were not legal they did not help.
They sought help from Nomada foundation, which has been helping them.
The agency does not follow the law.
They don’t provide work contracts,
they pay very little. This is the common denominator for South Americans coming here.
One of his friends who worked for another agency, has also lost his finger. The agency offered him alcohol and drugs so that if he would have accepted they could say that the accident happened because he was high or drunk.
The suspicion is that the material they were working with was also sourced illegally.
Currently, he has established a foundation to help others. He has no problem speaking about his experiences to inspire others to speak out.
He would like to justice and righteous work placement.
He is fighting for agencies to follow the law, especially in risky jobs
