Hidden Mosques
In Europe, there is fear of Islam taking over our culture and ways of being, Atrocious events blamed on those following Islam have influenced negatively. In some countries in Europe Islam cannot be openly practised. In the Greek capital Athens, where almost half the country’s 11 million people live, it is estimated that it is home to over 500,000- strong Muslim community, mostly immigrants from Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. Many of those are followers of Islam and would like to express their faith through prayer in an appropriate place of worship, however there is no such place, in fact there isn't any“official” mosque in Athens or Greece as a whole. The fight for a public space on which to build a Mosque is still very much on even if the far right political group Golden Dawn has lost ground and the community feels safer. Yet, an anti-Muslim and anti immigration agenda is forbidding the Muslim community of praying in a Mosque.
