51 imagesOn the surface Berlin is a modern city looking to the West whilst reconciling to the past; however beyond the surface, Berlin is pulled in different directions. Still today a fervent movement, mainly in the former East part of the city is resisting to the West and its perceived capitalism. Often this movement is harvested by squatters that have occupied premises in the eastern side of the city.

40 imagesDale Farm travelers lose their latest appeal to save Dale Farm, an Irish Traveller halting site on Oak Lane in Crays Hill. The site houses over 1,000 people. It was the site of one of the largest Traveller concentrations in the UK. Basildon District Council conducted a ten year legal challenge to evict the Travellers at the site, citing expansion into the area considered green belt. In 2011 the site became a battleground when the council decided to bring in police officers to remove activists and residents from the site.

26 imagesCouncil Estates are a part of London urban landscape. To many outsiders, these areas with high-density housing may appear sinister and to be avoided. Often the creation of estates have generated problems partly for the concentration of various ethnic groups and low income households. Some of these housing complexes have created communities among themselves. Loughborough Estate in South-West London, a complex of high-rise buildings and low flats is one of such areas. It is bearing the hallmarks of inner-city decay: vandalism, drug problems, burglary and violent crimes. Although it had its apex during the 1990's when was highly crime ridden, today most residents still feel a great sense of exclusion and uneasiness. Gun crimes among rival gangs remains a problem. As part of an initiative to shed light on the positive side of the Loughborough Estate and to portray the diverse lives of its residents forming the community, I was commissioned by the National Lottery Awards to produce a year long photo documentary on "Life on the Estate, Today". This project resulted in a booklet of postcards which were sent to all the residents in the area (40.000 households) and project supporters.

33 imagesHomelessness is a growing problem in the UK exacerbated by a growing poverty and shortage of housing. With nowhere to go, millions are forced to live in temporary accommodations and in overcrowded and inadequate conditions whilst on council housing waiting lists. The project captures these grim realities allowing the viewer into the lives of Britain's hidden homeless: people stuck in hostels, B&B and temporary flats. It represents a dramatic crisis because many are left in temporary, provisional situations for an unacceptable long time, living in limbo for two years or more. This has a lot of physical and psychological repercussions. The impact is great.

24 imagesThe UK has had a steady increase in the number of evictions since the year 2000 records. According to the Ministry of Justice 37,739 private and public sector tenants in 2013 saw their homes repossessed by court bailiffs. Behind each figure, a whole set of events have taken place leaving many people and families completely broken. The story of Francesca is one of these stories that largely takes place within social tenancies. It is a reflection on what it is to be a social tenant, and how becoming homeless can happen in a short space of time.

85 imagesSince December 2017, shipping containers have been approved by Ealing Council in west London to accommodate 248 homeless families. According to QED Sustainable Developments managing director Ross Gilbert “The new development will bring vacant brownfield land back into productivity." Families that live in the containers report their shock when they first arrived at the site, some not even understanding that the containers were to be their homes. "How could be humanly possible that containers could be offered as homes." Despite its initial purpose to serve as a temporary solution for homeless families, Meath Court in London Acton has fallen far short of its intended short-term stay. Families residing in shipping containers there continue to endure unacceptable living conditions while waiting for a safe and suitable place to call home. The stories I've gathered paint a distressing picture of the hardships faced by women, children, and families in Meath Court. The environment is characterized by rampant drug use, theft, and a pervasive sense of insecurity. Residents navigate dangerously insecure staircases and report incidents of sexual harassment, prompting some women to resort to creating WhatsApp groups to ensure each other's safety by sharing their whereabouts. It's evident that Meath Court fails to provide the basic security and dignity that these families deserve. Urgent action is needed to relocate them to a more humane and sustainable living situation.
